Townhouse Apartment, Brighton

“Small, but mighty”

Originally part of a Victorian townhouse that was converted to three apartments in 2020, this intimate home lacked character and exhibited all the trademarks of a standard contemporary conversion. The brief for Piers Thurston Home centred on rectifying this - introducing a sense of personality and character into the interior design, whilst utilising the limited space to facilitate the routine of the owner, establishing dedicated areas for working, dining and relaxing.

Our design proposal encompassed the above, playing on our client’s strong sense of style by incorporating print and pattern to distinguish one area from another, and establish strong focal points. The addition of dado-height panelling throughout and a faux beam installed between the living area and kitchen speaks of the history of the property, interpolated with contemporary furnishings for comfort and convenience, balancing old and new.

Commissioning bespoke joinery for the beautifully curved breakfast bar resulted in a piece that perfectly wraps the window overlooking the patio, and softens the masculinity and drama of the walnut-finish floors. Elsewhere, cost-savings were made in customising flat-pack storage furniture, with the additions of paints, wallpapers, hardware and mouldings.

Completed with high-end finishes like polished concrete, walnut timber and aged leather, the home now feels full of character, but without alienating the contemporary shell or the functions required of the space
